Organizers: Dr. Heino Nyyssönen

Description:
The main theme of the congress is "Power and Culture".

As a part of the congress we, professor George Schöpflin (London) and Dr. Heino Nyyssönen (Jyväskylä), will organise a symposium "Hungary: Politics and Society" (Politika és társadalom Magyarországon). This is a call for papers to deal, one way or another, with politics and society in Hungary.

We understand politics widely, a cultural and historical phenomenon and also as a part of everyday life. Papers could focus on the present. Hungarian democracy and its current problems. However, we do not exclude a discussion on politics and society during earlier periods, thus like Austria-Hungary, Horthy or the communist era.

Particularly we expect papers dealing with symbolic and rhetoric dimension of politics. Among party politics, characters and peculiarities of political culture are welcome. So are papers concerning Hungarian political thought including themes like nationalism, national symbols or media.

Date received: November 14, 2000
