Literature & the Poetics/Politics of Space

May 10-11, 2001

Gazimagusa, North Cyprus, Turkey

Literature

Host: Eastern Mediterranean University

Organizers: Dr. Lorraina Pinnell

Description:
In his essay, "Of Other Spaces", Michel Foucault claims that: "The present epoch will perhaps be above all the epoch of space. We are in the epoch of simultaneity: we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the epoch of the near and far, of the side-by-side, of the dispersed". With this in mind, we invite papers from various disciplines which will address the multifaceted, as well as contested, aspects of space in literary and cultural representations. Suggested panel topics may revolve around the following:

*the privileging of time over space *spatial metaphors and postcolonial theory *the politics/poetics of 'forgotten' spaces *monumental space and the space of the monument *the location of memory and longing *architecture and social action *space as the catalyst of history *psychoanalysis; Imaginary, Symbolic and Real space *film and constructions of mise-en-scene *subaltern spaces *performance and theatrical spaces: dance, drama, music *literature in cyberspace *is space straight? *the modern metropolis and myth *philosophy as a spatial proposition *cultural topographies *gendered spaces *art and the spatial subject
