Reflecting the diversity of interests within the philosophy departmentat the University of Toronto, we welcome papers from graduate students in all areas of philosophy: analytic and continental, western and non-western.Submissions are invited on all topics, but preference will be given topapers relating to the broad theme of ?reason and nature?. Some issuesthat might be considered under this theme:

· Naturalism: What is naturalism? Is there hope fornaturalist accounts of rationality/reason? · Must the naturalist be a reductionist? Is naturalism relevant? · Naturalism in epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophyof science/mathematics. · Naturalism, reason, and human personhood. · Reason and nature in race and gender debates. · Reason, nature, and power. · Nature as a point of resistance to reason; Nature and contingency. · Phenomenological perspectives on reason and nature. · Ancient views on reason and nature. · Views on nature and reason in other philosophical traditions:Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, African and Islamic philosophy, etc.

Papers (no longer than 4,000 words, for 30 minutes presentation time) shouldbe submitted by mail, in duplicate, to arrive before September 1st, 2000.They should be prepared for blind review, and should be accompanied byan abstract of 150-200 words and a cover sheet containing the author?sname, institutional affiliation, title of paper, surface address, e-mailaddresses, and telephone number(s). To save paper, we encourage double-sidedsubmissions. We hope to notify applicants of our decision by October 1st,2000.
