A Symposium to be held as a part of the 81st American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting:
AMS has organized the "Symposium on Precipitation Prediction: Extreme Events and Mitigation" as a major focus of the 2001 Annual Meeting. The symposium will be multidisciplinary, focusing on all aspects of quantitative precipitation forecasting, from observational issues through theory, modeling and applications to economic and societal impacts. The intent is to bring together experts who
* conduct basic research on precipitating weather systems,
* develop techniques and models for prediction of those weather systems,
* are responsible for the routing of water after it reaches the ground,
* are engaged in emergency preparedness,
* issue warnings of extreme precipitation events, and
* assess societal impacts of extreme precipitation events and improved precipitation forecasts.
