Host: University of Warwick
Organizers: Joy Sisley
Deadline for abstracts: February 11, 2001
Description:
The conference aims to stimulate inter-disciplinary dialogue about the translated and mediated character of culture and
society. To encourage provocative questions about the complex variety of forms translation takes in the twenty-first
century. To foster historical, cultural, and sociological perspectives on an inclusive concept of translation and cross
cultural communication. How does the convergence of traditional media forms in digital communication technologies
challenge commonly held concepts of translation? How has globalisation affected the ways in which people communicate
across cultures, across languages, and across media? What new insights are generated by inter-disciplinary research?
The three day conference will host plenary lectures, papers and workshops on the languages of translation in the digital information age, the correspondence of word and image in electronic media, and the art of translating in a global village. Proposals for papers of up to 30 minutes (including discussion time) are invited on any aspect of translation and mediation, particularly:
- visual culture - ethnography in translation - global media and translation - word/image translations - computer technology and translation - travel in translation - electronic publishing and translation
