Organizers: Richard Armstrong
Deadline for abstracts: February 01, 2001
Description:
We are soliciting papers on the translation of Greek or Roman prose fiction, into any language of any epoch. This includes the novel, Menippean satire, epistulary fictions, the dialogue (non-philosophical), and oratory for fictional occasions or on literary themes. Prose texts that include
significant amounts of poetry in them are perfectly acceptable. We welcome papers which engage in
theoretical questions that differentiate the translational practices of poetry vs. prose, but a paper need not do
this to be considered. Historical papers which set a given translatorís work in relation to other writings or the
work of other translators are welcome as well. As usual, translators currently engaged in a project may
present a discussion of their work in progress, or they may make an assessment of a translation they did some
time ago. We encourage discussions involving target languages other than English (Hebrew, Chinese,
Finnish, etc.), with the proviso that the paper be intelligible to those not blessed with knowing such languages.
Those interested may also peruse the bibliography on translation studies available on this website.
