Description:
HPOPT 2001 will take place in the context of the Dutch research project 'High Performance Models for Mathematical
Optimization'. In this project, funded by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), research teams cooperate
from four universities in the Netherlands: Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University, Technische Universiteit
Eindhoven, and Utrecht University.
The last decade has shown a dramatic increase of the power of linear and integer linear programming models and software. In addition, the last few years have also seen spectacular progress on modelling and solving real-world problems by nonlinear optimization. Not so long ago only problems of at most a thousand variables could be dealt with. Now, very large size problems arising from various applications can be formulated by new optimization models with more than 10.000.000 variables and solved on modern computers. These dramatic improvements have been achieved not by fine-tuning existing methods, but by the discovery and development of entirely new techniques. This is a fast-developing field with intensive ongoing research.
The meeting will consist of a one day tutorial and a two-day conference. The theme chosen for this year's tutorial is Computational Techniques for Optimization.
