Biology of Type IV Secretion Processes: Euroconference on the Medical and Ecological Implications

September 7-12, 2001

Medicine

Host: International Conference Centre Il Ciocco

Organizers: C. Baron (München)

Description:
Type IV secretion machineries mediate direct cell-to-cell transfer or secretion of virulence factors from Gram-negative pathogens to modulate their hosts defense response. This strategy is used by many important human and animal pathogens, such as Helicobacter pylori, Bordetella pertussis, Brucells suis, Legionella pneumophila and Rickettsia prowazekii. Type IV secretion machineries also mediate the spread of plasmids carrying antibiotic resistance genes between Gram-negative pathogens, e. g. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and genetic transformation of plants by Agrobacterium tumefaciens.

Talks and posters will present recent work on basic aspects, such as DNA processing, transfer of virulence factors, host response and ecological implications.

The exchange between scientists from different backgrounds (medical, biochemical and ecological) in roundtable discussions will help to advance the understanding of basic (model of the mechanism of type IV secretion) as well as applied aspects (inhibitors of type IV secretion-mediated transfer processes).

Date received: April 29, 2001
