PIMS-MITACS Workshop on Inverse Problems and Imaging

June 9-10, 2001

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Mathematics

Host: PIMS at the University of British Columbia
Homepage: http://www.pims.math.ca/industrial/2001/ipi/

Organizers: Michael Lamoureux (University of Calgary), Gary Margrave (University of Calgary), Gunther Uhlmann (University of Washington)

Description:
This workshop is the first meeting of the newly formed PIMS center for Inverse problems and Imaging and the third Inverse Problems Seminar of the Pacific Northwest (IPSPN). This meeting is supported by NSF, MITACS and PIMS. The previous two IPSPN were held at the University of Washington in Seattle in May 1999, and at Oregon State University in Corvallis in June 2000. The main goal of the IPSPN Northwest is to foster communication between mathematicians and other scientists in the Pacific Northwest working on various aspects of inverse problems. The different groups working in Inverse Problems at Calgary and the other Canadian institutions members of PIMS has lead to the creation of an international center for inverse problems and imaging.

Inverse problems arise in practical situations such as medical imaging, exploration geophysics, and non-destructive evaluation where, measurements made in the exterior of a body are used to deduce properties of the hidden interior. The purpose of the workshop will be to bring together people working on different aspects of the field, to appraise the current status of development and to encourage interaction between mathematicians and scientists and engineers working directly with the applications in the Pacific Northwest.
