The General Assembly decided, at its 54th sesion, to convene a Second World Assembly on Ageing in 2002, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Vienna World Assembly on Ageing, devoted to the overall review of the outcome of the first World Assembly, as well as to the adoption of a revised plan of action and a long-term strategy on ageing, encompassing its periodic reviews, in the context of a society for all ages.

The Second World Assembly will give particular attention to:

Action-oriented measures in a comprehensive response to the current ageing processes,

Linkages between ageing and development, with particular attention to the needs and perspectives of developing countries,

Appropriate forms of public/private partnership for building societies for all ages,

Measures to promote intergenerational solidarity.
