Latsis-symposium 2002 Iterative Solvers for Large Linear Systems A conference commemorating 50 years of conjugate gradients

February 18-21, 2002

Zurich, Switzerland

Mathematics

Host: ETH

Organizers: Walter Gander, Martin Gutknecht

Description:
In 1952, M. Hestenes and E. Stiefel published their seminal paper ``Methods of conjugate gradients for solving linear systems'' in J. Research Nat. Bur. Standards 49 (1952), 409--436''. This conference has the purpose to commemorate this event, review the early and later developments of the conjugate gradient and other Krylov space methods and their preconditioning as well as competing iterative methods for solving linear systems. Lectures on various applications relying on such solvers will be presented too.

There will also be a celebration of Professor Gene Golub's 70th birthday. For decades, he has been a promotor of the conjugate gradient method and related tools in numerical analysis.
