Description:
Oil Spill 2002 addresses recent research advances in different topics on oil spill
modelling, prevention, behaviour, effects, control and cleanup techniques.
The ever-increasing need for energy has given rise to a significant increase in the extraction and transportation of oil. As a consequence, the number of spills from oil wells and tankers at sea, as well as on the ground, has increased, resulting in significant environmental problems.
Recent disastrous oil spills have shown the extent of damage inflicted on the environment when a large volume of oil is released over a short period of time and, in particular, the susceptibility of certain environments such as coastal regions to those spills. Although oil spills are a major environmental issue at sea, with concern strongest among those who live in coastal regions, this conference will also address topics related to pollution of soil and land spills, such as those due to leaks during transportation by land carriers or pipelines.
The development of adequate oil spill contingency plans requires information about a large number of physical, chemical and biologically complex phenomena. Papers are also encouraged on these aspects as well as the research results from oil spill modelling, prevention and investigation methods, which are an essential tool for engineers and managers involved in contemporary planning.
