Description:
Brownfields 2002 will provide an international forum for highlighting the problems facing the
international engineering, business and scientific community in terms of the decrease of
available new land for development purposes. This will include looking at the long-term plans
that are being considered and implemented for the productive reuse of properties that have
been abandoned or idled. Thus satisfying current needs without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs.
Brownfields redevelopment is not solely an environmental issue as it requires the involvement of the financial, regulatory and community factors that make the whole process complicated. This is the main reason that lending institutions, investors and real estate developers were cautious when dealing with brownfield redevelopment. However, these entities have become more tolerant of potential exposure as they become more knowledgeable of the risk involved.
Given the economic and social benefits of brownfields redevelopment, there is a need for guidance on a process of brownfields redevelopment insuring the acceptability and therefore viability of such redevelopment. The preparation of the guidance requires further research as well as sharing of information, lessons and experience among experts in this field.
The main goal of Brownfields 2002 is to bring together international information, experience and research in order to give the conference participants both a greater knowledge and a greater ability to help revitalize their respective communities.
