Organizers: Wessex Institute of Technology

Description:
The Sustainable City 2002 stems from a series of conferences originated out of the need of bringing together different academics, professional and practitioners in a wide range of disciplines, to exchange ideas and identify best policies in practice for a viable urban environment.

The first of these conferences took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the year 2000 and the edited versions of the papers presented there were published in a book that became rapidly out of print. The success of that conference confirmed the need to reconvene this second conference, which is to take place in the beautiful and historical city of Segovia.

The conference aims to address many interrelated aspects of the urban environment from transport and mobility to social exclusions and crime prevention. It is hoped that the meeting will build on the contributions made in previous meetings, which successfully managed to provide an international view of the problems facing modern cities and their solutions.

The conference statement founded in Rio, outlines the overall aims of the conference series (this can be viewed at: www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/2000/scity/) and ends with the following paragraph:

"The concept of sustainability as applied to a city, is the ability of the urban area and its region to continue to function at levels of quality of life desired by the community, without restricting the options available to the present and future generations and causing adverse impacts inside and outside the urban boundary".
