Organizers: Wessex Institute of Technology

Description:
This conference will focus on issues involving advanced types of structures together with the behaviour of composite materials. Emphasis will be placed on the application of computational methods to model, control and manage the behaviour of high performance structures and materials. This will include a wide range of topics relating to the design, optimisation, manufacturing and experiments within these areas.

Conventional design procedures for engineering structures of all types consists in general of trying to satisfy certain performance requirements under a set of prescribed loading conditions. Traditional structures however, cannot modify their response mechanisms, and are then unable to perform successfully when subjected to load conditions, which are different to those that they were designed for or when some of the subsystem of components fail. These deficiencies have generated interest in defining a new class of so-called smart structures and new types of composite materials.

Although the conference will address all types of high performance structures and composites, importance will be placed on intelligent smart structures, i.e. those which have the ability to determine their present state, decide in a rational manner on a set of actions that would change their state to a more desirable one, and carry out these actions in a short period of time.

Intelligent as well as most high performance structures require the development of a generation of new materials, which can more easily resist a range of external stimuli or react in a non-conventional manner that can be interpreted as intelligent.
