The conference hopes to bring together theorists and practitioners who will consider and discuss, within the context of a multilingual society, issues facing teachers and learners in the 21st century. It also hopes to provide a forum where theorists and practitioners can share their ideas and experience, and discuss the impact as well as the educational, social and cultural implications of these on language teaching and learning.

The conference will focus on a number of sub-themes including:

the role of a second language in a multilingual society;

the role of the mother tongue in the teaching of a second languages;

the pedagogic significance of differences between the mother tongue and a second language;

the role of a second language in content learning;

the role of a second language as a medium of education;

language learning issues for students from minority language backgrounds;

approaches, methods and strategies adopted in the teaching of a second language in multilingual contexts;

implications of the above for teacher development and education.
