Technological advances in the storage, retrieval and management of information during the last millennium have engulfed all sectors of the society in the developed and developing nations. Information has become a vital asset for the survival of a nation and has also become an important commodity in people?s daily life. These changes have been brought about by the advancement of the Internet and Virtual technology. The Internet has created a ?borderless world? where information can be accessed and retrieved from almost anywhere in the world. While Virtual technology has enabled information to be presented and retrieved with higher graphic quality and efficient interactiveness, these technological developments have called for the reviewing and reengineering of professional work processes among information professionals in tandem with these changing trends. Hence this conference is aimed at achieving the following:

Aims:

· To highlight the current developments in the use of information technology in ASEAN libraries and information centres.

· To share the experiences of IT development projects and initiatives between ASEAN countries and developed countries.

· To identify possible areas of cooperation and strengthen strategic alliances among ASEAN countries in relation to electronic information resources and services.

The main topics of discussion are as follows :

1.World documentary heritage; whose responsibility is it? This session will focus on the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme and the virtual/digital programmes already undertaken by libraries and information centres worldwide in particular national projects or initiatives.. It covers the concepts, infrastructures, costs, services, and resolutions of challenges or problems faced. 2.Knowledge based information sources : currents trends and development. This session will highlight issues on the use of e-information sources and if manufacturers intended the libraries to have a role in promoting its use and how? Are libraries ready and equipped to handle future challenges? 3.Good governance and quality assurance

This session will highlight the policies governing the use and generation of e-information and the technical issues involved such as copyright, standards, conservation and preservation.

4.Standing at the Crossroads : Narrowing the Digital Divide

This session will address issues in narrowing the digital divide between the have?s and the have nots, between the urban and rural communities, and services for the special needs and the disadvantaged.

5.From digitisation to virtual reality Is global knowledge a blessing or a threat?
