Description:
This interdisciplinary conference proposes to explore the articulation between representations of masculinity, ideology and politics in twentieth-century Portugal through a focus on marginality and marginalisation. The perspectives adopted will range from the overview of particular generic discourses to detailed study of the shifting figuration of particular types: the Catholic priest, the fascist male, the indigent pauper, the war mutilated, the sex criminal, the homosexual and the libertine. This conference will be of interest not merely to those in the field of Portuguese studies, but to all with a comparativist interest in contemporary European history, gender studies and the articulations between social representations, ideology and politics.
