Description:
More than a decade after the death of Pier Vittorio Tondelli, this conference aims both to re-assess critically the literary
and cultural significances of the life and work of this pluralistic and very productive writer, and to identify new or
re-defined directions in the critical reception of his work which might be generated by the detachment from the decade and
century with which he has been so inextricably associated. The conference will seek to remove the writer and his writings
from the myth which has been constructed around Tondelli both in his life and since his death, and to consider how each of
the two aspects dialogues with or influences the other, both negatively and positively. Similarly, the conference aims to
extract Tondelli from specifically Italian surroundings and to take account of movements, theories, writers from outside
Italian culture which might offer alternative perspectives on his significance. It is hoped that a new context or contexts in
which to view Tondelli and his work will be shaped in the course of the day's discussions.
