Description:
This conference will investigate the development of hard-boiled crime fiction and film in post-war France and Italy. The emphasis will be on the ways in which such writing and filmmaking interact with formative cultural narratives from the 1940s to the present-day. Issues raised will include: the relationship between elite and popular culture in post-war France and Italy; the role and significance of interwar American literature as primary source; the cultural politics of noir narration; questions of intertextuality and 'hybrid' forms of crime writing, particularly in the work of contemporary writers, such as Jean Echenoz, Patrick Modiano and Antonio Tabucchi.

All papers will be delivered in English and the two-day conference will end with a round table discussion where speakers will include crime writers from France and Italy. It is hoped that the conference will be of interest not only to those in the fields of contemporary French and Italian Studies but to all with a comparativist interest in cultural histories of post-war Europe.
