Colloquium de Rocquencourt - Scientific computing: the finite, the infinite, and the future

December 18, 2001

Rocquencourt, France

Mathematics

Host: INRIA

Description:
At the heart of numerical mathematics is a crucial distinction between algorithms that finish in a finite number of operations and those that require, in principle, infinitely many. With time, the latter are taking over. We will discuss the nature of numerical computation, its great successes over the past fifty years, its curious status today, and its prospects for the years ahead.

Speakers: Nick Trefethen
