Description:
First Official Announcement
There will be an International Algebra Conference, in honour of the 80th anniversary of the birth of Z.I.Borevich. It will be held in Saint-Petersburg, September 17-23, 2002. The conference is organised jointly by the Saint-Petersburg State University, Saint-Petersburg Branch of Steklov Mathematics Institute of RAN, Saint-Petersburg Mathematical Society, Euler International Mathematical Institute and TPO “Severnyi Ochag”.
Zenon Ivanovich Borevich (November 07, 1922 - February 26, 1995) was an outstanding algebraist. He made important contributions in homological algebra, algebraic number theory, especially local fields and Galois modules, integral representation theory and the theory of linear groups. Jointly with I.R.Shafarevich he authored the famous monograph “Number Theory” which got world-wide recognition. Over many years he was the Head of the Chair of Algebra and Number Theory, the Dean of the Mathematics and Mechanics Department and one of the acknowledged leaders of the Algebra and Number Theory school in Saint-Petersburg.
The conference will cover all areas of Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory and Algebraic Geometry, with special emphasis in topics close to the research interests of Borewicz, viz. local and global fields, representation theory, homological algebra and algebraic K-theory, linear and algebraic groups. We plan both plenary talks and short communications in smaller thematic sections. Some of the extraordinary mathematiciasns have already accepted our invitation to speak.
The following mathematicians have agreed to participate in the Programm Committee of the Conference: S.Adian, L.Bokut', R.Carter, C.De Concini, L. Di Martino, Yu.Drozd, Yu.Ershov, I.Frenkel, M.Hazewinkel, Ch.Jensen, O.Kegel, Li Shangzhi, H.Koch, Yu.Matiyasevich, A.Mikhalev, W.Narkewicz, A.Olshansky, A.Parshin, V.Platonov, B.Plotkin, V.Popov, C.Ringel, A.Roiter, G.Seitz, I.Shafarevich, L.Shevrin, T.Springer, F. Van Oystaeyen, E.Vinberg, V.Voskresenskii, J.Wilson, E.Zelmanov, and we are expecting the final confirmation of some orther distinguished algebraists.
For more than two centuries Saint-Petersburg has been the capital of the Russian Empire. With the population of about 5 Million it is the fourth largest city in Europe. It has the largest fully preserved historical centre full of tourists attractions of all kinds: palaces, museums, theatres, boat trips, etc. One can also easily reach Summer Residences of the Russian Tsars, such as Peterhof, Pushkin (Tsarskoe Selo) and Pavlovsk.
The conference will be held in the Main Building of the University in the historical centre of Saint-Petersburg, across Neva from the Winter Palace, which was the official residence of the Russian Tsars and presently houses the museum of Hermitage.
