Description:
The unifying topic of this summer school is `Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions' (OP-SF). This topic has a very rich history, going back to 19th century when mathematicians and physicists tried to solve the most important differential equations of mathematical physics. Since then OP-SF has developed to a standard subject within mathematics, which is driven by applications. The applications are numerous, both within mathematics (e.g. statistics, combinatorics, harmonic analysis, number theory) and other sciences, such as physics, biology, computer science, chemistry. Over the last two decades the subject of OP-SF has blossomed enormously due to the interactions with these disciplines.

The summer school is primarily intended for graduate students or post-docs that have recently obtained a PhD-degree in mathematics, physics or computer science. However, everybody interested in the subject is welcome to attend the summer school. The main goals of this summer school are

* training of young researchers, especially in order to bring PhD-students to a good research level, * increase the interaction between various research groups, especially at the level of young researchers,

The 2002 summer school in Orthogonal Polynomials is to be considered as one of a series on summer schools on these subjects. Previous summer schools have taken place in 2000 (Laredo, Spain), and 2001 (Inzell, Germany). In 2003 the school is planned for Coimbra, Portugal, from July 14-26, 2003 (contact Amilcar Branquinho).
