The Mathematics and Computer Science Department of the University of San Diego is pleased to assist the Inamori Foundation in honoring Professor Mikhael Gromov, the 2002 Kyoto Prize recipient in the Mathematical Sciences on March 6, 2003. The Thursday afternoon presentations and reception comprise the Basic Science program of the 2003 Kyoto Laureate Symposium to be held at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice on the University of San Diego campus.

We wish to extend a warm invitation to all mathematicians to attend this memorable occasion to salute the mathematical contributions of Mikhael Gromov in geometry and algebra. Eminent scholars Yakov Eliashberg of Stanford University and Efim Zelmanov of the University of California, San Diego, have been invited to comment on the geometric and algebraic aspects, respectively, of Professor Gromov's accomplishments. Everyone is welcome to the reception which follows the afternoon presentations.
