CALL FOR PAPERS: Agri-Cultures
An Interdisciplinary Symposium on Trans-rural Economies
Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, Nova Scotia, Canada
September 18 – 20, 2009
“I didn’t cross the border, the border crossed me.”
Mobile knowledge practices pollinate and transient bodies populate our rural landscapes, producing the food we eat and bringing diverse cross-cultural experiences to the stationary cultures of farming. Often overlooked, this cross-pollination process of transcontinental exchange carries with it deeply seeded fears of the other (“illegal aliens”, “come-from-away’ers”, etc.) that short-circuit the vibrant claims of progressive localism. Local farmer’s markets feature prominently the fruits of the attendant farmer’s labours, while the temporary and transient labour contributions of migrant workers are rarely acknowledged. On the one hand, the farmer’s market represents a progressive turn towards sustainable agriculture and an ethic of cultivation; on the other hand, with so much recognition given to local voices, the farmer’s market is unable to recognize the voices of transient labour. Is this exclusion a by-product of previous politics of exclusion or is it built-in to the progressive politics of sustainable agriculture’s ‘local challenge?’ Why must transient labourers be kept, in a sense, secret? Can localities finally accept that the transcontinental knowledge practices and migrant populations are commensurate with the success of the ‘local challenge’ of sustainable agriculture?
