Organizers: The European Network on Industrial Policy (EUNIP) is an open, multinational network of researchers in economics and management who have specific research interests in the areas of economic development and public policy. Among a much wider range of industrial policy themes, a core feature of recent EUNIP annual conferences has been analysis of the roles of universities in economic development processes, and associated policy implications. At the 2008 EUNIP conference there were a significant number of papers in this area, including a special session organised with the Association of Social Economics on the role of the academic in undertaking economic and public policy analysis. Discussion at the closing plenary session identified these as critical ongoing issues for EUNIP, and it was argued that as social science academics working in policy-related fields we have a responsibility to question and analyse our own work and its relationship with development processes. In response, this EUNIP workshop focuses specifically on analysising the role of academic research in territorial (local, regional, national) socio-economic development processes.

Deadline for abstracts: September 15, 2009

Description:
The workshop aims to provide a forum for discussion spanning the role of the university in territorial socio-economic development processes broadly defined, to the specific challenges faced by academics in balancing independent research with institutional, political, societal and market pressures. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to discuss how this research agenda can be pursued in the future among participants. Envisaged possibilities include: an edited volume addressing important questions around the role of academic research in territorial economic development from a variety of perspectives; specific research projects and applications, for example addressing the lack of comparative research; the positioning of these issues within the next EUNIP conference (Reus, Spain, June 2010). Papers are openly invited that contribute to analysis of the role that academic research plays in territorial economic development processes, responding to questions such as: * What are the roles of universities as agents in territorial ‘systems of innovation’ or in a ‘triple helix’ model? What factors determine their effectiveness in these roles? * What are the strenghs and weaknesses of different research methodologies in facilitating an effective bridge between academic research in the social sciences and territorial economic development processes? How important is multi-discipliniarity? * Where is the line between academic research and policy- or business- consultancy? How important is it to maintain this line, and can it be maintained? * What implications arise for research from the changing management and organisation of universities? * Should academics and universities seek to be ‘entrepreneurial’? What aims/impacts should they seek in being ‘entrepreneurial’? * What policy implications arise from the analysis of these and related questions?
