The XIII Summer Conference
On General Topology And Its Applications
June 24-27, 1998
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)
Mexico city
The 13th Annual Summer Conference on General Topology and its Applications will be held at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City from June 24 to June 27, 1998.
The Conference will consist of 8 invited talks, contributed talks of 25 minutes in parallel sessions and workshops on Set Theoretic Topology and Topological Groups. It will also include special invited talks as a tribute to A.V. Arhangel'skii on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
All areas of topology-related mathematics will be covered. An emphasis is to be given to general/set-theoretic topology, continuum theory, geometric topology, as well as to applications of topology in other areas of mathematics and the sciences, especially in theoretical computer science.
A welcome party will take place in the evening of Tuesday, 23-rd of June in the Hotel Calinda Geneve. A conference banquet is to be organized on Saturday, 27-th of June. For accompanying persons, there will be guided excursions to the National Museum of Anthropology and the site of the Great Temple of the Aztecs in the heart of downtown Mexico City. On the morning of Sunday 28-th of June there will be a guided tour by bus to the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, (dating from about 250 B.C.) which lie about 50 kms north of the City - this tour is free to all participants and accompanying persons.
You are encouraged to contribute a 25-minute talk at the Conference. There will also be poster sessions for extended abstracts. The deadline for submission of abstracts is June 1, 1998.
S.García-Ferreira (UNAM), I.Puga (UNAM), M.Sanchis (Universitat Jaume I), A.Tamariz-Mascarúa (UNAM), V.Tkachuk (UAM), F.J.Trigos-Arrieta (California State University at Bakersfield) and R.G.Wilson (UAM).
Citizens of the U.S., Canada, the European Union, Hungary, Japan and some countries of Latin America are not required to obtain visas for short visits (up to 3 months) to Mexico; you will need only a valid passport and a landing card supplied by the airlines. Citizens of most other countries have to apply for a visa obtainable at the nearest Mexican consulate or embassy. In the (unlikely) event that you have problems obtaining a visa, please notify us as soon as possible as the universities in Mexico City may be able to intervene and expedite the issuance of a visa.
Mexico City is served by direct flights from most major cities in North America and many cities in Latin America and Europe, as well as flights by Japan Airlines and Malaysian from the Far East.
The Hotel Headquarters of the conference is
Hotel Calinda Geneve
Calle Londres #130,
Colonia Juarez
06600 Mexico D.F.
The hotel is situated in the centre of the tourist district in Mexico City (the Zona Rosa). Participants may reach the hotel from the airport by taxi - about US$9.00. Tickets for licensed airport taxis must be bought inside the airport buildings and we strongly recommend that you do not use pirate taxis which are sometimes plying for hire outside. The Calinda Geneve is a **** tourist hotel with large double rooms, each with two double beds. We have arranged a special price of 75 US dollars per night per room for the duration of the conference and have reserved a block of rooms at the hotel from Tuesday 23rd until Sunday 28th. Triple rooms are also available at a cost of 85 US dollars. On the registration form, you are asked to give us the dates of your stay and we will then make the reservation with the hotel for you. The deadline to receive hotel reservations is June 1st; however, payment should be made directly to the hotel during your stay. The hotel accepts travellers cheques and all major credit cards. If you wish to share a room (and thus reduce the cost by 50%) please indicate to this effect and give us the name of your intended room-mate. If you wish to share and do not have an intended room-mate, again, please let us know and we will try and accommodate you with another conference participant. A list of alternative (and cheaper) hotels will be given in the third announcement.
Breakfasts are available in the hotel or more cheaply in one of the many restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. For example, a full American (=English) breakfast at Sanborn's next door to the hotel will cost under US$5.00.
Transportation from the hotel to the Faculty of Science will be provided each morning with a return after the last lecture in the evening. However, if you wish to make the trip on your own account, taxis are plentiful and cheap and there are metro (subway) stations within a few minutes walk of both the hotel and the Faculty of Science.
A complete buffet lunch (including vegetarian food) will be available each day of the conference on campus at a cost of US$5.00 per day. Lunch tickets can be purchased at the time of registration. Otherwise, many restaurants may be found between 2 and 3 kilometers from the Faculty of Science.
Dinners can be taken at any of the many restaurants in the Zona Rosa - there are many which will serve a complete meal for US$10.00.
Mexico City lies at an altitude of about 2200 metres (7250 feet) a.s.l. and has a temperate climate. Summers are cool with an average daily maximum of about 25ºC (77ºF) and a minimum of about 12ºC (54ºF). Rain usually falls in brief periods in the afternoon. During this season the pollution levels are usually quite low and shouldn't cause any problem.
Mexico City and its satellites now form one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world; it is a fascinating combination of the new, the colonial and the precolonial cultures. Geographically the city is located in a closed valley surrounded by volcanic peaks, the highest of these being Popocatepetl at 5452 metres and which is presently in low level eruption.
The Aztec city of Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325 on an island in the shallow, partly saline Lake Texcoco, supposedly on the orders of the god Huitzilopochtli who, in legend, told the people to build their city where they saw an eagle devouring a serpent. After an arduous trek from the coast, Hernan Cortés first visited the city in 1519 and returned to conquer it in 1521, the date on which the construction of the colonial city began.
The Ciudad Universitaria (University City) where our conference will take place is famous for its modern architecture and murals by such artists as David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera. Maybe the most famous building on the campus is the central library which is covered on all four sides by a mosaic of Juan O'Gorman.
The registration fee is 95 US dollars. This amount includes the cost of a copy of the proceedings of the conference (which will be published in the series Topology Proceedings), conference material, coffee breaks and the welcome reception on Tuesday June 23-rd. Students are exempted from paying the registration fee and will therefore not receive a copy of the conference proceedings. The fee for accompanying persons who wish to take part in the social and cultural activities during the conference and the tour on Sunday 28th is 40 US dollars. We regret the increase in the registration fee over previous years; this is due to an increase in the cost of publishing the conference proceedings.
A very limited amount of financial aid is available for full-time students. Applications should be made as soon as possible to the e-mail address of the conference.
Unfortunately, because of Mexican financial laws we are not able to accept credit cards for the payment of the registration fee, which can be paid at the time of registration by traveller's cheques, in Mexican pesos or in US dollars.
Please enter your registration data in the areas provided below. Be sure to fill in all appropriate fields. That will help us in the final planning of the event.
