Citizens of most other countries will require a visa obtainable at the nearest Mexican consulate or embassy. In the (unlikely) event that you have problems obtaining a visa, please notify us as soon as possible as the universities in Mexico City may be able to intervene and expedite the issuance of a visa. ARRIVAL and HOTEL INFORMATION The Hotel Headquarters of the conference is Hotel Calinda Geneve Calle Londres #130, Colonia Juarez 06600 Mexico D.F. The hotel is situated in the centre of the tourist district in Mexico City (the Zona Rosa). Participants may reach the hotel from the airport by taxi - about US$9.00. Tickets for licensed airport taxis must be bought inside the airport buildings and we strongly recommend that you do not use the pirate taxis which are sometimes plying for service outside. The Calinda Geneve is a **** tourist hotel with large double rooms, each with two double beds. We have arranged a special price of US$75.00 per night per room for the duration of the conference and have reserved a block of rooms at the hotel from Tuesday 23rd until Sunday 28th. On the registration form which will be sent with the third announcement in April, you will be asked to give us the dates of your stay and we will then make the reservation with the hotel for you. However, payment should be made directly to the hotel during your stay. The hotel accepts all major credit cards. If you wish to share a room (and thus reduce the cost by 50%) please indicate to this effect and give us the name of your intended room-mate. If you wish to share and do not have an intended room-mate, again, please let us know and we will try and accommodate you with another conference participant. Triple rooms are also available at the hotel at a cost of US$85.00 per room. Other hotels offering somewhat cheaper prices are as follows: Hotel Bristol, Plaza Necaxa No. 17, Colonia Cuauhtemoc, US$52.00 double, $45.00 single, Phone 52-5-533-6060 and 52-5-208-1717 Hotel Maria Cristina, Lerma No. 31, Colonia Cuauhtemoc, US$43.00 double, $39.00 single, Phone 52-5-566-9688. Hotel Polanco, Edgar Alan Poe No. 8, Colonia Polanco, US$57.00 double, $55.00 single, Phone 52-5-280-8082. The following luxury hotel near to the National University will also offer a special price to conference participants (please mention that you are attending the Topology Conference at the National University). Hotel Royal, Periferico Sur No. 4363, Colonia Jardines en la Montania, US$92.00 double, Phone 52-5-726-9036. We regret that the organizing committee cannot make reservations with these hotels, you should do this directly by phone. ************************************************************************** **** THE DEADLINE FOR US TO RECEIVE HOTEL RESERVATIONS IS JUNE 1st ******* ************************************************************************** Breakfasts are available in the hotel or more cheaply in one of the many restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. For example, a full American (= English) breakfast at Sanborn's next door to the hotel will cost under US$5.00. Transportation from the hotel to the Faculty of Science will be provided each morning with a return after the last lecture in the evening. However, if you wish to make the trip on your own account, taxis are plentiful and cheap and there are metro (subway) stations within a few minutes walk of both the hotel and the Faculty of Science. A complete buffet lunch (including vegetarian food) will be available each day of the conference on campus at a cost of US$5.00 per day. Lunch tickets can be purchased at the time of registration. Otherwise, many restaurants may be found between 2 and 3 kilometers from the Faculty of Science. Dinners can be taken at any of the many restaurants in the Zona Rosa - there are many which will serve a complete meal for US$10.00. SOCIAL and CULTURAL ACTIVITIES There will be a welcome party starting at 8.00pm on Tuesday, 23rd June in the Hotel Calinda Geneve and a conference banquet on Saturday 27th June in the neoclassical Palacio de Mineria, which dates from the 19th century (cost US$22.00). For accompanying persons, there will be a guided excursion to the National Museum of Anthropology and the site of the Great Temple (of the Aztec Empire) in the heart of downtown Mexico City on Wednesday, June 24th and an outing to the floating gardens of Xochimilco on Friday 26th June. In the evening of Thursday 25th of June there will be a special performance of the Ballet Folklorico of the University for all participants and accompanying persons. On the morning of Sunday, 28th of June, there will be a guided tour by bus to the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, (dating from about 250 B.C.) which lie about 50 kms north of the City - this tour is free to all participants and accompanying persons. REGISTRATION The registration fee is US$95.00 which includes a copy of the proceedings of the conference (which will be published in the series Topology Proceedings), conference material, coffee breaks and the welcome reception on Tuesday June 23rd. Students are exempted from paying the registration fee and will therefore not receive a copy of the conference proceedings. The fee for accompanying persons who wish to take part in the social and cultural activities during the conference and the tour on Sunday 28th is US$40.00. A registration form will be included with the third announcement. We regret the increase in the registration fee over previous years which is due to an increase in the cost of publishing the conference proceedings. Unfortunately, because of Mexican financial laws we are not able to accept credit cards for the payment of the registration fee, which can be paid at the time of registration in cash or by traveller's cheques in U.S. dollars or in Mexican pesos. Conference registration will take place at the Hotel Calinda from 12 noon until 7.00 pm on Tuesday 23rd of June and from Wednesday onwards at the conference site at the National University. FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS A very limited amount of financial aid is available for full-time students. Applications should be made as soon as possible to the e-mail address of the conference and in any case before April 30th. Successful applicants will be contacted before May 15th. TRAVEL INFORMATION Mexico City is served by direct flights from most major cities in North America and many cities in Latin America and Europe, as well as flights by Japan Airlines and Malaysian from the Far East. There will be a limited number of shuttles from the airport to the hotel during the afternoon of Tuesday 23rd June. The timing of these shuttles will be given in the final announcement to registered participants at the beginning of June. MEXICO CITY Mexico City lies at an altitude of about 2200 metres (7250 feet) a.s.l. and has a temperate climate. Summers are cool with an average daily maximum of about 25C (77F) and a minimum of about 12C (54F). Rain usually falls in brief periods in the afternoon. During this season pollution levels are usually quite low and should not cause any problems. Mexico City and its satellites now form one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world; it is a fascinating combination of the new, the colonial and the precolonial cultures. Geographically the city is located in a closed valley surrounded by volcanic peaks, the highest of these being the snow-capped Popocatepetl at 5452 metres. The Aztec city of Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325 on an island in the shallow, partly saline Lake Texcoco, supposedly on the orders of the god Huitzilopochtli who, in legend, told the people to build their city where they saw an eagle devouring a serpent. After an arduous trek from the coast, Hernan Cortes first visited the city in 1519 and returned to conquer it in 1521, the date on which the construction of the colonial city began. The Ciudad Universitaria (University City) where our conference will take place is famous for its modern architecture and murals by such artists as David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera. Maybe the most famous building on the campus is the central library which is covered on all four sides by a mosaic of Juan O'Gorman. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** Details of the conference are posted at the web-site www.iztapalapa.uam.mx/summer98 which is also available for registration and the reception of abstracts.
