Nationalism and Identity in Third Republic France
International Interdisciplinary Conference
Keele University
6-8 July 2001


The Department of Music, in association with the Royal Musical
Association, is hosting an interdisciplinary conference on the theme of
nationalism and identity during the Third Republic France.

Keynote speakers:
Professor Hugh Macdonald, Department of Music, Washington University,
St. Louis will be giving the Peter le Hurey Memorial Lecture on
^ÑFraternity and Nationhood in the Third Republic^Ò.
Professor Debora Silverman, History Department, UCLA will give a keynote
lecture on ^ÑPleasure and Mystery: Catholic Sources of Gauguin^Òs
Abstraction^Ò

Recitals
Dr. Roy Howat will be giving a piano recital of works by Chabrier, Ravel
and Debussy, and Jane Manning, OBE, will perform Messiaen^Òs Harawi.

Themes include:

· The Canon and French Musical Identity
· In Search of French Musical Genres and Styles
· French/Jewish Identity
· The Power of the Press
· Regionalism
· Aesthetic Reactions to World War 1
· France and the Importance of Elsewhere

Scholars from UK, France, Germany, Austria, Finland, Poland, Canada and
USA will present papers covering a range of disciplines, including
musicology, history, French studies, literary studies and art history.
